GREENVILLE - It appears that the North Mac Panthers have adapted quite well into their new conference surroundings and in football they're really enjoying the initial season in the SCC.

Head coach Patrick Bowman and his club haven't faced much competition so far.

North Mac took to the road and dominated Greenville on Friday night as they improved to 6-0 on the season.

The Panthers ran 42-plays on the night and averaged over 11-yards per play on the ground and over 16-yards per pass completion.

The big plays were many and the defense was equally as successful as Coach Bowman's club put away the hosts early in the second half of a 50-14 thrashing of Greenville.

In the six victories in the South Central Conference this season, the Panthers have outscored the opponents 237-36.

“Being the new guy (team in the conference) you're going to have a target on your back. We just wanted to let these guys (SCC teams) how we play football,” said Coach Bowman. “We want to do it all the right way and at 6-0 your target is even bigger.”

Five-eleven senior quarterback Kaden Brown completed 8-of-9 passing attempts for 150-yards and two touchdowns while also rushing 10 times for 148-yards and an additional score.

His teammates also got in on the scoring fun.

Senior teammate wide receiver/kicker Logan Hamman had a busy night.

Hamman caught three of the passes, which included a 48-yard touchdown strike in the second half.

Hamman was also busy knocking through 5-of-5 PAT kicks.

Senior running back Zane Hogan romped for 130-yards rushing on just eight attempts, which included a pair of touchdown runs.

Another senior got in on the act as Joe Reinhart pounded out 44-yards on 10 carries, including a pair of short TD runs.

Coach Bowman has the luxury of having an additional QB to toss it around the yard.

Five-seven junior Dane Vance hit on both of his passing attempts, one of which went for a score to Reinhart, which totaled up three scores for 5-11 senior running back.

Greenville and head coach Todd Hutchinson came into the contest having won four-consecutive games after an opening week loss at Hillsboro.

But things didn't go well from the outset as they trailed early in the game.

The Comets had their chances but they couldn't capitalize on the few mistakes that North Mac made.

The Panthers coughed up three fumbles that were recovered by Greenville.

However nothing materialize after each turnover.

One of the bright spots on the night, and the season, for Greenville was the running of 5-7, 216 senior tailback Grant Wilderman.

Wilderman carried the ball in workhorse fashion 27-times for 143-yards.

However he and his teammates found it very difficult to find the endzone on this night as North Mac kept them off of the scoreboard until the second half after the game was decided.

Senior quarterback Ryan Jackson ended up just 9-of-21 in the air for 78-yards and one TD to go with a pair of interceptions.

Sophomore running back Declan Graber rushed six times for 31-yards for the Comets and sophomore receiver Eli Shadowens caught three of the Jackson passes for 22-yards.

Gus Olsen, another sophomore for the Comets, snagged five passes for 54-yards and a TD from Jackson.

The tone was set early by the North Mac defense, holding the Comets to less than 50-yards total offense in the first half.

Greenville didn't get their initial first down of the game until early in the second quarter after they were already down two TD's.

North Mac, after forcing a three-and-out on the first Comets' possession, struck first and got on the scoreboard.

Brown ran to his left and found a seam in the Greenville defense.

He avoided a couple of tackle attempts and raced 54-yards to the endzone.

One of the few miscues by the visitors turned into more points.

A fumbled snap turned into no problem for Brown on the extra-point try.

The senior rolled to his right and found classmate Cade Etter in the right side of the endzone for a two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead with 10:23 left in the opening quarter.

After getting good field position on the ensuing kickoff, Greenville managed to get into North Mac territory before failing on a fourth-and-seven from the Panthers' 24.

(CONTINUED)
Brown set up the next North Mac score on a long run (41-yards) to the Greenville four-yard line.

A Vance pass to Reinhart was the second TD for the Panthers.

The Hamman PAT made it 15-0 with just :25.4 left in the opening quarter dominated by NM.

Greenville finally got somewhat of a sustained drive going in the first quarter which carried over into the second.

Moving from their own 42 to the North Mac 25, the drive stalled with an incomplete pass on fourth-and-10.

The Panthers marched quickly down the field, going 75-yards in 10-plays.

With Reinhart and Hogan running through the Comets, North Mac reached the Greenville nine where Brown completed a nine-yard scoring strike to senior wide receiver Jerrod Dowell.

Another successful kick by Hamman pushed the advantage to 22-0 with 3:12 left before the half.

Greenville again couldn't get anything going on its next try and the punted right before halftime as they trailed by three TD's at the break.

Coach Hutchinson's club had a chance to switch the momentum as the Comets forced a fumble by NM on the opening drive of the second half.

Reinhart, on a carry up the middle, fumbled and Greenville senior Sam Wagner covered the ball at the Comets' 43.

Whatever momentum that could have came right after the turnover quickly was gone.

The first play after the fumble, Jackson dropped back and passed the ball to the left side of the field.

North Mac senior linebacker Joe June jumped and tipped the Jackson pass into the air and he grabbed his own deflection for a deflating interception as the Panthers got the ball right back.

It took Brown and his teammates just four plays to go 48-yards with Reinhart plowing into the endzone from two-yards out.

Another Hamman kick put the score at 29-0 with 9:23 left in the third quarter.

“Our defense really stepped up (getting the turnover) and that helped get back the momentum for sure,” said Coach Bowman.

A three-and-out by Greenville and a punt to the North Mac 26 set up another quick Panther score.

A Reinhart run went for 22-yards to the Greenville 48 and then Brown dropped back and found Hamman on a long pass.

The senior receiver took the ball in stride and headed into the endzone for a 48-yard TD.

Another PAT made by Hamman put the Panthers up 36-0 at the 7:07 mark.

The first Greenville score came on a four-play drive.

Jackson completed a pass to Gus Olsen for 19-yards into the North Mac side of the field and then the senior QB found Olsen again, this time on a 38-yard strike down the right sideline for a touchdown.

The made Pat by Dieken Graber with 5:30 remaining in the third made it 36-7.

The next two North Mac offensive drives end abruptly with a punt and on a fumble by Brown.

Greenville, however, failed to take advantage of either of the North Mac issues.

Hamman came up with a big interception in the endzone in which he returned the ball back to the their own 35.

Following the Brown fumble on the next play, Greenville couldn't move the ball and turned it back over on downs.

Two plays by North Mac, a nine-yard run by Brown and a 59-yard touchdown run by Hogan after taking a pitch from Brown on an option, stuck a fork in the Comets.

Hamman with another PAT pushed the margin to 43-7 with 5:55 left in the fourth.

Five rushing attempts from Wilderman totaled 50-yards, getting the ball to the North Mac 15.

After a motion penalty moved it back to the 20, Declan Graber went 15 and 5-yards on consecutive runs to reach the endzone.

A PAT by Dieken Graber closed out the Greenville scoring with 2:41 left.

Vance returned the next kickoff 30-yards to set up the Panthers at the Greenville 45.

A two-yard run by Reinhart was followed by a Hogan 43-yard touchdown run down the right sideline, which ended the onslaught with 1:39 remaining.

Hamman's fifth and final PAT closed the book on the sixth consecutive North Mac win, which is one win more than the 5-5 overall mark from last season.

The final totals summed up the North Mac domination.Coach Bowman's bunch crunched the Comets with 410-yards of total offense compared to 241 by the hosts.

Reinhart (16 tackles) and June (six tackles) led a strong defensive effort.

The Panthers first go-around in the South Central continues with a game at home against Gillespie next Friday followed by important games at Pana (5-1) and at home against Staunton/Bunker Hill.

“We are still looking at one game at a time and the next one up is Gillespie. We just talked about that in our huddle break (after the game) we will worry about the next one after that,” said Coach Bowman. “Overall this was a solid football game by us. We had a couple of mistakes but we need to clean up but the good thing is that we will get better.”

Greenville is now 4-2 overall and in the league as the Comets need one more win in the final three games to become playoff eligible.

Games against Pana and Vandalia at home sandwiched around a road game at Carlinville won't be an easy road to being playoff eligible for Greenville.

Coach Hutchinson and his program have reached the playoffs in 12-of-13 seasons in his tenure, including the last five in-a-row.

“We have a couple of things we have to clean up but that's always good when you're 6-0 and you can still get better,” said Coach Bowman. “We have a lot of good skill kids and good teammates, which keeps everyone fresh and that goes a long way.”
