PINCKNEYVILLE - For the Olney Richland County Tigers their road trip to play Pinckneyville on Saturday produced a much needed win and a dominating performance.

Head coach Matt Music's his club racked up 34 second quarter points on the way to a 46-20 win.

The road victory evened the Tigers' overall mark at 2-2 while the Panthers, after losing two straight games to Covid19 forfeits and a 53-0 defeat at Benton, fell to 0-4 on the campaign.

Olney's 5-foot-9, 150 quarterback Dawson Brown was effective on this afternoon as he connected on 11-of-13 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown.

Rushing the ball, Brown also carried part of the load for Olney as he scored a pair of touchdowns, on five attempts accounting for 49 yards.

The junior signal caller got plenty of help from his teammates.

Five-foot-ten junior running back Hudson Lathrop scored two touchdowns on runs of two and three yards respectively while ending up eight carries for 38 yards.

Braedon Burgener, a 5-foot-10 senior wide out/running back, caught four passes for 71 yards and ran the ball three times for 38 yards and a touchdown while also making a key play defensively, running back an interception for a touchdown.

Zechariah Wease, a 6-foot-4 junior, caught a pair of passes for 57 yards and a touchdown while also delivering an important first half hit that helped propel his team to the win.

Six-foot-one senior Levi Egleston caught three passes for 20 yards for Olney.

“I've been doing this 12 years, 11 here, and we have always had perimeter guys and it makes it easier when you have kids with a lot of confidence. And today was the first game this year that we did a great job stock blocking on the perimeter,” said Coach Music. “Lathrop has been an animal in the weight room and it showed today. From the point of attack he was breaking tackles and dragging guys. Our offensive line had a 'chip on their shoulder' this week, too.”

In total nine different Tigers carried the ball while six different Tigers caught passes in the rout.

Coach Music got an even better performance from his defense as they kept the Panthers from getting anything going until late in the game after the decision had been rendered.

Pinckneyville didn't have nearly as good of day as they needed to get their first win of the 2021-22 campaign.

Head coach Logan Spain, in his first year leading the Panthers' program, didn't get much offense going until the second half with a running continuous clock.

Six-foot-four, 215 senior quarterback Trey Moll was just 1-of-9 passing for 41 yards and a pair of interceptions.

However there were two of the bright spots for Pinckneyville on Saturday.

Six-foot senior running back Gabe Paredes and 6-foot senior wide receiver Joey Iaccino.

Paredes was the top ground gainer on the day with 15 carries accounting for 98 yards and a TD.

Iaccino ran back a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown in the first half.

Jase Lee, a 6-foot sophomore, rushed three times for 46 yards while 6-foot-3 junior wide out Kellen Scott caught Moll's only completion for 41 yards.

The Tigers stopped Pinckneyville on the two occasions in the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter, that turned out to be big momentum shifts.

The Panthers managed to move the ball into Olney territory on their opening drive but lost a fumble at the Olney 17 yard line.

The Tigers took the ball 83 yards for their first touchdown.

Brown, with his team facing a 4th and one at the Pinckneyville 31 yard line, took a snap and ran to his left 31 yards to the end zone for a score.

Although the PAT was wide right, the Tigers owned a 6-0 lead with 6:04 left in the opening quarter.

In what turned out to be a big defense stand, Olney stopped the Panthers after the hosts put together their best drive in the first half.

Taking over at their own 33, the Panthers marched down the field and into Tigers' territory.

With the help of a pair of Olney penalties and six rushes by Paredes the Panther to the Olney seven yard line.

However two rushes left the Panthers with a third and goal from the Olney eight.

Consecutive passing attempts by Moll produced two incomplete passes.

The fourth down pass by Moll intended for Iaccino was broken up on a timely hit delivered by Wease at the goal line.

“We had a goal line, red zone situation where we 'bowed our necks' and got the stop we needed early to get our offense back on the field again,” said Coach Music. “Wease made a big play breaking up the fourth down pass. I'm really proud of our guys and our coaching staff.”

Taking over the ball at their own eight, Olney drove the ball 92 yards on eight plays to get their second touchdown of the day.

Brown connected on four passes in the drive.

The biggest completion was on a scramble to the left by Brown before finding Wease all alone on the left side of the field.

Wease took the ball down to the Panthers' two yard line.

Lathrop took care of the rest with a two yard touchdown run up the middle.

Freshman kicker Jacob Beard, after missing his first PAT, nailed his second one for a 13-0 Tigers' lead with 8:35 remaining in the first half.

The Panthers best play of the first 24 minutes came on the ensuing.

Iaccino took the kickoff from the Pinckneyville eight yard line, run up the middle behind his blockers before cutting to his right and sprinting down the right sideline for a 92 yard touchdown.

Even thought a two-point conversion failed, the Panthers had their first TD of the season and trailed just 13-6 with 8:20 left.

The remainder of the half and the opening minutes of the third quarter belonged to the Tigers.

Taking over on their own 47 after a short squib kick, Olney took just four plays to score.

Brown found senior tight end Kelby Steber for 28 yard for a first down at the Pinckneyville 25 yard line.

Wease took a handoff and went the next 15 yards to the Panthers' 10.

Two more runs, this time by Lathrop, resulted in another touchdown with final three yards straight up the middle.

Another successful PAT by Beard pushed the Olney advantage to 20-6 at the 7:15 mark.

If things weren't going back enough for the hosts, their first play from scrimmage resulted in more points for the visitors.

From their own 34 yard line Moll dropped back to pass but his attempt was picked off by Burgener.

The junior took the ball 45 yards for a back-breaking touchdown.

Another PAT pushed the lead to 27-6.

The next Panthers' possession didn't fair much better than the last.

After three plays lost 15 yards, including a bad snap that resulted in a 13 yard loss, Pinckneyville decided to go for it on fourth and 25 from its own 25 yard line.

Moll through a deep pass which was once again intercepted, this time by Brown at the Olney 47.

Another Brown pass to Burgener resulted in a 50 yard gain to the Pinckneyville three yard line.

Burgener took the ball into the end zone on the next play.

Despite another missed PAT, the Olney lead ballooned to 33-6 with 4:07 left.

Unfortunately for Pinckneyville, the Tigers had another score in them before the first half came to a close.

Following the long kickoff return by the Panthers in the first half, Coach Music decided not to kick the ball deep so Pinckneyville once again got good field position at its own 39 yard line.

Nevertheless, the Panthers couldn't move the ball with four downs producing just three yards.

After a third down sack of Moll, the Tigers took over the ball after a fourth down incomplete pass

It took Olney just three plays to score.

A 23 yard completion from Brown to senior Detrych Curtis and a 20 yard touchdown pass to Wease closed the book on a dominating first half.

The PAT was good by Beard as Olney Richland County was in command at 40-6 with just :52.2 left before intermission.

Pinckneyville ran three plays for minus three yards to close out the first half.

“We came out and played hard in the first quarter and were controlling the line and moved the ball down the field but I think we quit a little bit in the second quarter,” said Coach Spain. “I told them at halftime 'don't look at the scoreboard, we just have to go out and keep playing' and that's what we did. Just play to the best of your abilities. They came out and played as hard as they could and I'm proud of them.”

Olney ended what was remaining of the outcome doubt on their first possession of the second half.

Taking the third quarter kickoff, the Tigers methodically drove 50 yards in 10 plays which used up just over five minutes.

Senior wide receiver Landyn Piercefield got in on some of the fun, catching a 22 yard pass to get the ball to the Panthers' 23.

A pass interference penalty helped the Olney drive and Brown closed out the drive with a roll out and run from the five yard line with 6:50 left.

The important PAT by Beard put the game into mercy mode and a continuous clock with it 46-6.

To Coach Spain and his kids' credit, the Panthers didn't give up.

Pinckneyville managed their first scoring drive on it's next chance.

Taking the ball on their own 31, the Panthers went 69 yards on four plays.

All were runs by Paredes with the final one on a 31 yard romp with 3:13 left in the third quarter.

The two point conversion failed with the score now standing at 46-12.

Pinckneyville scored the final points of the game with a 59 yard drive against mostly Olney reserves as the clock continued to run.

Sophomore running back Jaden Kellerman scored from 16 yards out with 3:48 remaining.

This time the Panthers converted its two point conversion with Kellerman taking it into the end zone.

Olney out gained the Panthers 394 to 199 in total yards from scrimmage.

Coach Spain will have to get his kids ready for another tough test as the Panthers will travel to Perry County and conference rival DuQuoin next Friday night.

“That's a good football team we played today but we got a lot of good things out of today's game,” said Coach Spain. “Gabe Peredes is a kid who we started playing at running back about halfway through the week and he carried the load for us today. We have to keep pushing and get better.”

Olney Richland County will also hit the road next Friday with a trip to Little Illini Conference foe Marshall.

“We're used to making trips. We went last weekend up to near Springfield to play Virden North Mac. For non-conference games I look for teams we don't play very often. So our guys are used to it,” said Coach Music. “We were a bit flat early but our guys were motivated. We needed this win pretty bad to get ready for the rest of the season.”
